For the third consecutive year, CAEN has renewed its successful collaboration with the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Nuclear Physics (EMJMD NP), once again joining the University of Seville’s Department of Physics for a series of seminars and hands-on sessions dedicated to advanced radiation detection techniques.
This long-standing partnership—already documented in previous editions of the program—has become a highlight of the academic year for both CAEN experts and the international cohort of Erasmus Mundus students. Building on the momentum of past events, CAEN returned to Seville in 2025 with a new seminar titled “From Signal to Spectrum: Digital Gamma Analysis with CAEN Systems.”
This year’s program focused on the technological shift from traditional analog electronics to modern digital acquisition systems in gamma-ray spectroscopy. For decades, analog processing chains have been the core of spectroscopy. While robust and time-tested, analog systems inherently limit flexibility, scalability, and overall system performance.
Digital methods have revolutionized the field. By digitizing detector signals directly at the front end and applying powerful algorithms to the sampled waveforms, today’s digital pulse processing unlocks faster computation, higher energy resolution, and advanced event-by-event characterization.
During the seminar, CAEN specialists guided students through the advantages of digital architectures, with a particular focus on the DPP-PHA and DPP-PSD algorithms implemented in CAEN digitizers. Participants explored how these digital approaches extract precise energy, timing, and pulse-shape information, streamlining the entire acquisition chain and enabling innovative experimental applications—from fundamental nuclear physics to radiation monitoring and applied research.
As in previous years, the experience proved enriching for everyone involved. The enthusiasm of the students, combined with the dedication of the CAEN team and the warm hospitality of the University of Seville, reinforced a collaboration that continues to grow stronger with each edition.
CAEN looks forward to further expanding this partnership and contributing to the training of the next generation of nuclear physicists empowering them with tools, expertise, and state of the art technologies.
