Photomultiplier Tube (PMT)

Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) have been one of the most important photon detection technologies in experimental physics for decades. Owing to their extremely high sensitivity, fast response, and excellent signal amplification capabilities, they have become essential instruments in a wide range of scientific and industrial applications, including nuclear and particle physics, medical diagnostics, analytical instrumentation, fluorescence spectroscopy, and radiation detection.

PMTs operate by exploiting the photoelectric effect to convert incident photons into electrical signals, which are then amplified through a cascade of dynodes to achieve gains of several orders of magnitude. This unique operating principle enables the detection of extremely weak light signals, making PMTs an ideal choice whenever high sensitivity and precise timing are required.

Before photomultiplier tubes can be effectively employed in experimental measurements, it is essential to understand their operating principles and performance characteristics. The experiments presented in this section introduce students to the characterization of PMTs through a series of hands-on laboratory activities. Typical measurements include the investigation of gain, operating voltage, signal response, linearity, and other parameters that determine detector performance under different operating conditions.

Through these experiments, students will gain practical experience in the characterization of vacuum photodetectors while developing skills in electronic measurements, data acquisition, signal analysis, and experimental data processing. This knowledge provides the foundation for the subsequent experimental activities of the handbook, where PMTs are employed as high-performance light sensors in a variety of physics experiments.
