Environmental Radioactivity Outdoor Experiments

Natural radioactivity is an integral part of our environment. Minerals and materials originating from the Earth’s crust contain naturally occurring radionuclides (NORM), which contribute to the background radiation continuously present around us.

The most relevant primordial radionuclides include Potassium-40, Uranium-238, Uranium-235, and Thorium-232, together with their radioactive decay products. Other naturally occurring radionuclides, such as Tritium and Carbon-14, are produced through natural activation processes.

The experiments presented in this section allow students to explore outdoor gamma environmental radioactivity through direct measurements in real environments. Using the GammaEDU Backpack, students can investigate the spatial variability of background radiation, identify the contribution of natural radioactive sources, and become familiar with portable radiation detection techniques.

These activities provide a practical introduction to environmental radiation monitoring and help students understand the presence and role of natural radioactivity in the world around them.
